Project: Beach Club at The Sanya EDITION
Location: Hainan Province, China
Award: Hospitality Interiors: Entertainment, Bronze, 2023
Design Practice: Various Associates
Client: EDITION hotels
The Sanya EDITION hotel’s new beach club was designed to refresh and activate a deserted outdoor beach area, introducing a landmark socialising destination aimed at the young and fashionable in the city’s Haitang Bay area.
The design concept behind the project is "Under the Tree” and features a bamboo-woven structure of five overlapping tree-like canopies with different heights and forms. Their organic and natural curved profiles merge beautifully into the surrounding coconut groves, with the new structures scattered around sunken booths. Each is connected to the ground through "trunks" that naturally blend with the surrounding lush plants.
Each canopy structure showcases highly intricate bamboo weaving, achieved through days of on-site work by multiple experienced craftsmen.
Design highlights
The materials used were chosen not only for their appealing and interesting textures, but also because they could be sourced locally and are environmentally friendly. As well as the natural bamboo canopies, recycled pebble-wash creates warm, textured pavements, all of which contribute to a sustainable design project committed to environmental protection.
