Dubai speakeasy serves up immersive interiors

“One can almost hear and smell the moody and slick bar atmosphere through the photos,” Anna Reiderman-Hickey, Judge

Project: 7 Tales

Location: Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Award: Hospitality Interiors: Entertainment, Silver, 2023

Design Practice: LW

Client: Grosvenor House, Dubai

This fun and immersive speakeasy bar on the 44th floor of Dubai’s Grosvenor House features dark and moody interiors with graffiti and canvases on the walls and ceiling. The captivating artwork is combined with carefully planned groups of more traditional and subtle seating, including a centralised Negroni gaming table. This focal point involves guests in a unique dice game that determines their drink of the night. Windows offer views over the ever-changing Dubai Marina skyline and strategic use of mirror on the columns and portions of the ceiling, helps to vary the space. All finished off with a simple but effective lighting scheme.

Design highlights

The customised graffiti on the walls and ceiling is titled, "Relight My Fire, My Heart's Desire" and hand painted by talented artist Gary Yong. It references Japanese pop culture, traditional paintings, Art Deco and 1960s and 70s graphic design.
