The sensitive interior renovation of Beijing Railway Station encompasses the original central hall and two waiting rooms originally built in the 1950s. One of the top ten most important buildings in the Chinse capital in its heyday, it belongs to the National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit and was designated as a listed building in 2019.
With an average daily passenger flow of around 60,000 people, the various facilities built within the station lacked unified planning and design. The revamp has improved chaotic signage and incorporated a systematic lighting design to provide a significantly more user friendly experience.
Design highlights
An elegant colour palette and finishes - including changing the leather seats to their original green colour - has had a transformative effect. A custom-made new service counter in keeping with the original design replaces an ugly modern version.
