Inspired fashion store evokes nature and chinese shanties

“Modern and edgy design, sophisticatedly detailed in neutral materials to form a dynamic backdrop,” Roshni Kshirsagar, Judge

Project: TFD Shenzhen Flagship Store

Location: Shenzhen, China

Award: Retail & Consumer Design Interiors: Independent Shops & Small Chains, Silver, 2023

Design Practice: PMT Partners

Client: TFD Group

TFD is a well-known independent designer multi-brand store in China. In its Shenzhen flagship, PMT put forward the concept of "artificial nature" which evokes mountains, forests, valleys and plants across seasons, and embeds smaller stores within the store, echoing the ecosystem of the fashion trade. The space is divided into "island" and "bark house" installations, each covering an area of dozens of square metres. The store is inspired by the concept that every creator is an island and a growing tree. The Fashion Door is designed as an artificial forest that allows creative souls to grow freely.

Design highlights

Each individual installation is built in the form of grass, trees, islands, mountains and stones with varying distances between each other. The moving lines flow across the space like streams. The bark house installations are inspired by the shanties built with bark in the coastal areas of southern China. Lacking industrial construction materials in the past, locals combined the sequoia bark and the felt to build shanties near the sea.
