The design concept behind the second terminal of Bangalore International Airport was ‘airport terminal in a garden.’ This lush, green space has been designed and developed to offer passengers an immersive experience as they explore the unique flora sourced from multiple ecological habitats in India. In the process it highlights the rich history and culture of the Indian state of Karnataka in which the terminal building is located.
With a biophilic design that features hundreds of trees and numerous rare, endangered and threatened plant species it elevates the usually mundane flight passenger experience.. The terminal also features over 900 kilometres of bamboo cladding as well as hanging gardens suspended from the ceiling.
Design highlights
The plants are nourished by a fully automated irrigation system, ensuring that they thrive and maintain their lushness. A one kilometre long, 10-metre-high green wall features 460 tropical plant species while the whole terminal features 3,600 plant species native to India.
