Chain + Siman’s renovation of The Hotel Avándaro, in Valle de Bravo, Mexico has created a luxurious atmosphere while preserving the historical charm of the hotel which originally opened in 1958.
The interior spaces have been redesigned to balance iconic architectural features such as sloping roofs and wooden beams with modern elements that enhance the guest experience. The design team used natural and locally sourced materials, rich textures, and a warm colour palette reflecting Avándaro’s landscape and cultural heritage.
The judges described the design as "restrained" and "sophisticated" and praised its "unified language of materials, lighting and space that blends with the architecture and environment".
The hotel has been thoughtfully divided into distinct zones to cater to different types of guests: residents, convention attendees, club members, and general hotel guests. Each zone is designed to meet specific needs while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic throughout the property.
Convention spaces have been equipped with state-of-the-art technology and modern furnishings, ensuring functionality without sacrificing style. Leisure areas, including guest rooms, lounges and dining spaces, have been designed for tranquillity, featuring plush seating, custom-designed furniture, and local artwork.
The judges said: "Locally sourced natural materials are deployed in clean lines to create a contemporary but warm and reviving experience. There are some very skilful spatial interplays and sculpting of natural light."
They added: "There is great use of lighting to 'lift' the old ceiling up and at the same time accentuating it as a design element that runs throughout the entire scheme."
Design highlights
Sustainability was a key focus of the redesign, with an emphasis on refurbishing existing elements and using locally sourced materials. This approach reduced environmental impact and supported local craftsmanship, adding authenticity to the hotel’s aesthetic. Natural materials like stone, wood and textiles harmonized with the surrounding landscape, creating a serene atmosphere.
Guest rooms have been equipped with electronic controls for lighting, temperature, and security, accessible via a mobile app. The clubhouse features facial recognition systems for user access, and centrally managed audio systems through an iPad, allowing seamless control from the lobby to the restaurant. Water conservation was another priority, with rainwater collection and reuse systems reducing reliance on municipal water supplies, serving as a model for environmental stewardship.
