Award: Silver, Hospitality Interiors - Restaurants & Cafe's, Small Practice (Under 20 Employees), 2024
Location: Sydney, Australia
Design Practice: Tom Mark Henry
Client: Joel Best
Bar Besuto, a hidden bar and omakase restaurant in the heart of Sydney’s business district, is influenced by elements of Japanese Noh Theatre. The interiors, by Tom Mark Henry, are designed to be dark and inviting and combine theatrical elements with contemporary design to create a captivating and exclusive atmosphere.
The judges said: "This is a beautiful concept, and I truly admire the interpretive design reflected in the interior details, patterning and textures."
From the bespoke tapestry by local artist Chris Yee at the entrance, to the amber-filled whiskey collection that is displayed against the raw textures, every detail is carefully curated to create an atmosphere of mystery and refinement. The spatial planning, inspired by traditional stage lighting techniques, guides guests through unexpected seating moments, while custom fabric art installations by local artisans add a contemporary twist to the design.
The judges said: "The design is well-executed and feels intentional in material choice, from lighting to handcrafted details. The layering of materials gives tactile depth and enhances intimate seating."
