Award: Bronze, Residential Interiors, One Off Homes (Under £1M), 2024

Assure Interiors’ design for Coconut Grove Villa features cool, understated interiors and well-considered outdoor rooms incorporating the clients’ collection of furniture and art.

The studio has introduced a serene palette of neutral hues, layering texture and interest via tactile materials as part of a laidback and refined decorating scheme suitable for tropical living.

The hallway has a modern vibe with a retro chandelier and the architectural elements have been enhanced by specially selected lighting for nighttime drama.

The panelled living room features a mantlepiece that’s integrated into the wood panelling while the room’s length mirrors the library on the opposite side of the house.

The judges praised the use of a varied mix of materials "to create texture and interest", "great incorporation of art throughout" and the way in which the design offers "a sense of the client’s personality".

Well-considered space planning responds to the architecture, delivering a room that functions well despite the many doors. Dividing the living room into two spaces, one in front of the fireplace and another with swivel club chairs and an ottoman in front of a metal coffee table, creates distinct zones for the large family to enjoy.

Design highlights

The library has been designed as a flexible space that also doubles as a family room. The decorative light fixture creates a cosy effect. Even though the space is generously sized it retains an intimate yet sophisticated feel. The 1970’s inspired swivel chairs mingle with black leather wrapped bentwood chairs, and a contemporary sofa in a soft grey velvet injects textural interest. The studio sourced a two-person chaise for comfortable TV watching.

"The library does a great job at feeling cosy, special, and private even though all the spaces are luxurious," the judges said.

Latin American art and a vintage lamp act as a foil to the formality of the architecture. A cowhide rug from Argentina and two antique Indian wood panels with mother of pearl inlay reflect the clients’ love of travel.

The main outdoor terrace functions as an outdoor family room and features concrete Cuban tiles.
