Art-filled villa has a sense of humour

"Art and the pragmatic needs of home functionality shape well layered environments that are memorable, recharging, inviting and provocative to the mind," Irena Savakova, Judge

Project: Villa in Western Suburb of Shanghai
Award: Silver, Residential Interiors, One Off Homes (Under £1M), 2024
Location: Shanghai, China
Design Practice: EVD

This villa in Qingxi Garden in the western outskirts of Shanghai, designed by EVD, offers 1,500-square-metres of living space. The fusion of various elements and diverse aesthetic styles showcase the lifestyle of the young family who live there. In the middle of the day, a semicircle of natural light falls onto the floor in the living room, making the occupants feel as if they are standing under a dome, thanks to the arched opening at the top of the room. The space under the vaults is equipped with half-open glass doors and windows, establishing the fluidity of the expansive space.

The structural order of the sculptures, the natural texture of the ceramics, the originality of the glass ceiling lamps, the tension of the paintings, and the artistic fusion of the East and West, embody an eclectic design philosophy that enriches the space.

The judges said: "The sculpted interiors and the well-proportioned spaces set the stage for a unique art collection without taking away from the warmth that defines the sense of home. Lots of whimsical moments throughout are contrasted by a light and bright backdrop."

They praised the "excellent integration of unusual modern art and classic furniture pieces" and the way in which the home offers "a sense of the client’s humour, through art and decorative elements."

The circulation pattern of the home has been systematically organized. EVD introduced multiple routes leading to the attic and the first and second basement floors to create connectivity among diversified functional areas throughout the villa.

"The material palette and interior elements such as the stair and flooring work well and help to draw the eye and body through the spaces. The project embodies a pronounced quality of visual excellence," the judges added.

Design highlights

With the use of marble veneers and wood floorings, along with artistic images, the studio has created a gallery-like atmosphere that integrates life and aesthetics into a relaxing living environment. The master bedroom suite offers a comprehensive living space with a bedroom, a toilet, a bathroom and a closet, and also provides the functions of leisure and entertainment. The artistic wall collage and monkey-shaped lighting fixture in the children’s activity room provide an interactive and dynamic space.
